The Annual Declaration of Industrial Waste (DARI) is a key report for responsible waste management in companies. This mandatory procedure allows authorities to assess the environmental impact and establish better strategies for sustainability. In this article, we will explain what the DARI is, who must submit it, its types, deadlines and how to obtain more information to comply with this obligation.

What is the DARI or Annual Industrial Waste Declaration?

The DARI is an official document that reports on the quantity, typology and treatment of industrial waste generated by a company during the previous year. This procedure, mandatory in Catalonia, has as its main objective to ensure that waste is managed properly, minimizing its environmental impact. Through the DARI, a circular economy is promoted by identifying opportunities to reduce, reuse and recycle industrial waste.

This report includes data on hazardous and non-hazardous waste generated, as well as details on its storage, transport and final treatment. Companies must submit it annually to the Waste Agency of Catalonia, contributing to better control and planning in environmental management.

Who must file the DARI

In accordance with Decree 93/1999, of April 6, 1999, regarding waste management procedures, all companies that carry out an industrial activity and have production processes are required to submit the Annual Declaration of Industrial Waste (DARI).

The activities requiring declaration are included in the following headings of the CCAE-2009 classification (CCAE, equivalent to the CNAE, which is the national classification of economic activities), published in Decree 137/2008, of July 8, 2008:

These companies are obliged to detail all waste generated and ensure that it is managed in accordance with current regulations.

Types of DARI by producer

Currently, there are two types of DARI:

  • Simplified DARI: It is carried out by those production centers with 5 or less employees.
  • Ordinary DARI: It must be made by the production center that has more than 5 employees in total (including self-employed, management, sales personnel, etc.), i.e. including all the employees of the company, regardless of whether or not they participate in the production process of the center. In this declaration, more data and information is requested than the simplified DARI, since it is understood that the volume of the company is larger and therefore there are more parameters to be controlled.

When the DARI is presented

The deadline for submitting the Annual Industrial Waste Declaration is March 31 of each year. This report contains the data corresponding to the previous year. It is important to respect this deadline, as failure to file the DARI or filing it incorrectly may result in administrative and financial penalties.

The submission process is carried out through the digital platforms of the Waste Agency of Catalonia, specifically through the SDR platform, which provides companies with the necessary tools to complete the process.

How to receive information about DARI

Complying with DARI can seem complex, especially for companies that generate multiple types of waste. However, there are guides or resources and specialized companies that offer advice on waste management and declaration preparation, such as Sircat.

In our case, we help you identify, classify and quantify the waste generated, ensuring that the information submitted in the DARI is accurate and complies with all legal requirements. In addition, we provide guidance on current regulations, such as the specific treatment of hazardous waste, authorized transportation and the necessary records for its proper management.

The Agencia de Residus de Cataluña also provides detailed guides on how to proceed with the DARI through the SDR and even resources on how to enter data if the manager is from outside Catalonia.

The importance of DARI in waste management

DARI is not only a legal obligation; it is also a fundamental tool for improving sustainability in the industrial sector. By promoting efficient waste management, it reduces environmental impacts and encourages the reuse and recycling of materials.

The correct presentation of the DARI reflects the companies’ commitment to the environment and the circular economy, ensuring that resources are maximized while minimizing the impact on the environment.
